Don't Panic Look at Squints in Babies, Here's the Explanation

Mother and Father may feel panicked and worried when they see Little's eyes look cross-eyed. But in some conditions, crossed eyes in infants turned out to be normal. Squint or strabismus is a term for the position of the eyeball that is not aligned or not straight, both pointing inward or outward. This condition can make the view unfocused. Crossed eyes can develop since childhood, even since infants and toddlers.

Fake Squint in Baby

In the age range of 0 to 6 months, if your eyes look squinting, especially when he is very tired, you don't need to worry. Some babies are born with extra skin folds at the corners in their eyes. This can cause the baby to look cross-eyed, when in fact it is not. This phenomenon is called pseudoesotropia or fake squint, and is quite common in infants. Pseudoesotropia is more common in Asian infants who have small and almost flat nasal bones. In addition, this condition will usually be seen when the baby's eyes focus on objects that are very close. The distance between the two pupils of the eyes that are too close will give the effect of a fake squint more clearly. The folds in the corners of the baby's eyes will disappear and the nose bones will form more and more as they develop. The age of 6 months, the eyes of the Little One should not seem to squint again and be able to focus on an object.

What Causes a Baby's Eyes to Become Squints?

Cross-eyed in infants can be caused by disorders of the eye muscles or nerves that control eye movements, genetic disorders (such as Down syndrome), and certain medical conditions (such as cerebral palsy). Not only that, babies born prematurely or born with low body weight are also more at risk of crossed eyes.

How to Overcome Squints in Babies

If your child is 6 months old but his eyes still look cross-eyed, you will need to take him to the eye doctor for examination. Crossed eyes need to be treated as early as possible. If left unchecked, eye squinting can trigger lazy eyes that will interfere with your child's vision. Some treatments that can be an option for dealing with squinting eyes are:
  • Special glasses: The purpose of using these glasses is to improve the position of the baby's eyeball, so that it returns straight.
  • Eye patch (eye patch): Eyes that do not squint will be covered with eye patches for several hours per day. This method can train squinting eye muscles, so that the squint conditions can be reduced.
  • Eye drops: Eye drops containing atropine are dripped on non-squinting eyes so that the vision is blurred, so the squinting eyes are trained to see with focus.
  • Vision therapy: This therapy is done to train the coordination of eye muscles. Vision therapy can be done by an eye doctor or therapist.
  • Surgery: Surgery is performed on the eye muscles, so that the position of the eyeball becomes straight and the movements of the two eyeballs can be aligned.
Although eye squints in infants can be caused by normal things, Mother still needs to pay attention to the condition of the eyes of the Little One and see it to the doctor regularly. Eye examinations are recommended starting from 3 days after the baby is born, and every 5-6 months until the age of 1 year.
